Dog Survives Florence Flooding By Floating On Sofa For A Week

Soshe the Maltese dog is safe and sound thanks to the Humane Society of Missouri's remarkable Disaster Response Team.

The dog got separated from her owner during Hurricane Florence in North Carolina and was left stranded in a flooded house for almost a week. Stranded in another state and unable to reach her flooded home, Soshe's owner reached out to the Humane Society of Missouri's Disaster Response Team, which were one of the animal rescue groups stationed in North Carolina to help Hurricane Florence recovery efforts.

It took the Humane Society of Missouri's Disaster Response team three attempts to locate the house where the dog had ridden out the Hurricane since the flood waters made the houses difficult to identify. On the third attempt, the water had receded enough to spot the house.

Rescue Dog

After having to deal with a broken-down boat and paddling for half of a mile, the rescue team finally made it to Soshe's house. Upon their arrival, they were amazed to hear barking coming from inside! They kicked down the front door and found the small Maltese dog floating on a living room couch, where she likely had stuck out the storm for the past week.

The Humane Society of Missouri’s Disaster Response Team carefully picked up Soshe and gave the hungry dog some food before she was picked up by her owner's friend. Eventually, the lucky dog was reunited with her very grateful owner.

Soshe's remarkable rescue was one of the many rescues the Humane Society of Missouri’s Disaster Response Team were involved in after Hurricane Florence. During their time stationed in North Carolina, they rescued dogs, pigs, horses, cats, and more animals from flooded homes, gave them a safe place to stay and reunited them with their families. Thanks to their heroic efforts, many animals were saved from the catastrophic flooding that occurred as a result of Hurricane Florence.

This poor little dog should never have been been left to fend for herself. Thank you so much to The Humane Society for this amazing rescue! You have saved so many lives that this storm would have ended. You are all truly heroes to me! There are no words to express my gratitude for your dedication to animals. ❤️
