Beckyjean Widen’s parents were sleeping when flames suddenly surrounded their house in Santa Rosa, California. As they made their quick escape, they went to grab their dog Izzy to carry her with them to safety. But in the chaos that ensued, Izzy ran away. Devastated, they had no choice but to leave without her as the flames grew closer and closer.
"They had to drive through walls of flames across a burning wooden bridge to get to mark west springs road and to safety. They lost everything, but my mom was most devastated about leaving Izzy," Beckyjean Widen wrote in a Facebook post.
Days after the blazing fire passed, Beckyjean's brother Jack Weaver and her husband, Patrick, made their way over to the property to see if "by some miracle Izzy survived." Though they were turned away by police, the men were determined to find Izzy and hiked approximately 3 miles to the property.
Remarkably, the dog was found alive and well. And she couldn't be happier to have been found! The video below shows the men hiking up to the property. Skip ahead to about the 3-minute mark or so to see the moment they finally see Izzy.
In the video below, the Associated Press met up with the two men and Izzy to learn more about the happy reunion that ensued. "It was one of the greatest moments of my life," Jack Weaver remarked of the moment he realized his family's dog was alive and well.
